The Umbrella The Long Neck

Both at least 300 years old

Traditional Japanese monsters.

The one on the left is an umbrella-turned-monster. Old household tools and personal belongings, if they are made nicely to begin with, take on more character as they age. They eventually become monsters. Or at least that's the thinking. In addition to umbrellas, water kettles, pots and pans, and painting scrolls are some examples of what often starts walking and talking.

The long neck is one of my favorite monsters. They look normal in the daytime, but the neck starts stretching at night. They just can't help it. There are wonderful stories about them being able to travel far and see things while the body is still lying in bed at home.
